With actress Danielle Soames at her side, acting as a "shadow," Lisa Mayo, deploys snatches of song, pathos, and humor to guide us through the fragmented collection of memories that make up her life’s journey. Among the Living was written and performed by Lisa Mayo, directed by Spiderwoman Theater's Muriel Miguel. It premiered at La MaMa Experimental Theater Club in March, 2011.

Sisters and life-long collaborators, Muriel Miguel, Gloria Miguel, and Lisa Mayo founded the internationally acclaimed Spiderwoman Theater. In 2008, Lisa began suffering from dementia. Muriel began to help her use performance as a way to organize and understand her latest phase of life. As her sister recorded Lisa’s thoughts on paper, a storyline began to emerge. Among the Living is Lisa’s tale, in her own words, a poignant view of her attempt to grasp her shifting reality. In the one-woman show (including a “shadow” who helps guide and orient her on stage), Lisa from a first-person perspective, describes her journey, her hallucinations, her fleeting memories.

In June 2011, a film was made of the stage production at Dixon Place Theatre. The film is available through Loose Change Productions. Among the Living was originally conceived as part of Spiderwoman Theater’s series The Elder Project.
